As part of our initiative to drive innovation in sustainable food service, we are hosting a Zero Waste hackathon designed to tackle food waste through technology and creative solutions.
Challenge
The food service industry faces a critical challenge in reducing food waste, impacting sustainability and operational efficiency. A major cause of waste is inaccurate demand forecasting, leading to over-ordering and under-utilization of ingredients. Traditional models rely on historical data but fail to adapt to real-time trends, seasonality, and sudden demand shifts. This hackathon invites teams to develop scalable, technology-driven solutions that minimize food waste across procurement, inventory management, meal preparation, and customer consumption while promoting sustainable practices.
Solution
Leveraging AI-powered demand forecasting and smart procurement can significantly reduce food waste in the food service industry. Businesses can use AI models trained on historical data, foot traffic patterns, weather conditions, and local events to predict demand and adjust procurement accurately in real time.
Automated inventory systems can optimize stock levels, while data-driven dashboards provide visibility into waste reduction and cost savings. The goal is to create adaptable, technology-driven solutions that integrate seamlessly into existing operations, driving environmental and economic benefits.
Food waste in the food service sector is often caused by poor demand forecasting, over-ordering, and lack of visibility into real-time consumption trends.
Therefore, we’re inviting participants to build AI-powered, scalable solutions that:
- Predict food demand accurately
- Automate procurement and inventory
- Track waste and promote sustainable practices
- Integrate seamlessly with operations in food service environments
The solutions should be adaptable, impactful, and rooted in sustainability.

-
Is the prototype working?
-
Are enough bells and whistles in place to ensure a bug-free, happy-path execution?
Scope
25 points
- Scope of hack – While you will define the scope of what you will build, the scope will be judged in the context of the idea you submitted.
- Judges will be looking to see how well your hack addresses the core challenge(s) of your idea.
User experience
15 points
- How good is the user experience?
- How easy or difficult is it for a first-time user, familiar only with the idea submitted, to navigate through the prototype?
Aesthetic appeal
10 points
-
Is the GUI pleasing to the eye?
-
Does the prototype show a sense and understanding of colors, typography, iconography, and other design elements?
Wow factor
10 points
-
Any features, functions, or look and feel that stand out for technical reasons; technically challenging to implement or effort intensive but has been developed.
